International law firms and company legal departments increasingly demand lawyers with a global perspective. We have designed our LL.M. program and its unique clinical methodology to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to move to the next level in your professional development.
The LL.M. class represents a unique opportunity for you to network and share diverse backgrounds, points of view and cultures while working with lawyers trained in different legal systems.
On completion of your coursework, you may apply for an additional semester at one of our partner schools in the US, Latin America or Asia. Incoming exchange students from these schools also add to the diversity of your courses and group work in Madrid.
Visiting Students
We welcome applications from visiting students, who study for one semester in the LL.M. program and may be able to transfer credits back to their home law school. For more information, please click here.
CloseYou may choose between a program taught 100% in English, or a bilingual program in which half of the classes are taught in Spanish and the other half in English.
The program taught in English provides students with a learning experience that combines international and European law with an MBA module, hands-on experience in an internship in a law firm or company legal department, and writing an LL.M. thesis under faculty supervision.
The bilingual program, taught in English and Spanish, is ideal for students who would like more extensive study of Spanish law along with the MBA module. This option does not require a Spanish law degree, but does assume a background in the basic concepts of the civil law.
CloseAny LLM program is only as good as the professors that make up its faculty.
At IE, our faculty provides a unique learning experience which combines hands-on practice with the depth of cutting-edge research and scholarship.
Our full-time faculty is a core group of scholars, researchers and teachers dedicated to developing and transmitting knowledge on a variety of legal and business issues.
A significant part of our faculty includes top practitioners from major law firms and company legal departments, as well as other legal professionals. These professors bring their practical experience into the classroom directly from their work in the offices, boardrooms, courts and arbitration hearings of the legal and business community.
CloseThe LL.M. in International Legal Practice is a full-time program of postgraduate study which runs for ten months. All classes are held in Madrid. The program combines general coursework in legal and business areas with a broad offering of international electives. The program is structured in three trimesters, plus a preparatory pre-program and optional exchange semester.
MBA Module
The MBA Module which forms an integral part of the LL.M. in International Legal Practice includes courses usually taught as part of a graduate business program, including Economics, Accounting, Strategic Management, Financial Management, Communication Skills and Leadership Workshops.
The objective is to provide law students with broad knowledge of the fundamentals of business management and strategy, so that they will be better able to meet the needs of their future clients in business-related matters.
Method
The IE Case Method used in the LL.M. in International Legal Practice is probably unlike anything you have experienced before in a law classroom. Instead of listening passively to lectures, you will be faced with more than 500 practical case problems over the duration of the program, each one of which requires you and your team to solve a range of legal and business problems and then draft the documents needed to achieve the objectives of your hypothetical client.
The IE Case Method is designed to replicate some three years of professional practice in just 10 intensive months. In most cases, the case problems are inspired by the professional experience of our faculty.
